South Dakota Republican Lawmaker Steve Hickey: Gay Sex Is “One-Way Alley for the Garbage Truck”

Steve HickeyA Republican state lawmaker and Christian leader from South Dakota has written a letter warning of what he calls the dangers of gay sex, titled “A One-Way Alley for the Garbage Truck.”

Rep. Steve Hickey, a Republican representing Sioux Falls, wrote to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader because he is upset that South Dakota’s same-sex marriage ban is being challenged in federal court.

Hickey writes that his anti-gay missive is “an open letter to the medical and psychological communities” seeking affirmation of his view that “gay sex is not good for the body or mind.”

“Pardon a crude comparison, but regarding men with men, we are talking about a one-way alley meant only for the garbage truck to go down,” he writes, calling on the state’s doctors to “come out of the closet” and not “feel silenced and intimidated.”

Answering charges that marriage equality opponents are on the wrong side of history, Hickey writes:

“This indeed is a matter of being on the wrong side of history considering that historically, homosexuality has been a notable marker of the downfall of past civilizations, not their rise.”

Hickey also demeans transgender people by writing that “41 percent of those with gender dysphoria attempt suicide,” without noting the role that a largely intolerant, sometimes hostile and even violent, society plays in driving such individuals to despair.

Many South Dakota Facebook users expressed support for Hickey’s anti-gay letter:

“Love it and love the title,” commented Timothy Begalka of Clear Lake.

“I am proud to know you, Steve Hickey,” concurred Autumn Mann of Huron.

“Blessings for your efforts,” wrote Gary Jerke of Sioux Falls.

“Thanks, Steve, for standing up for what is right and righteous,” wrote Jerry Mootz of Sioux Falls.

“Thanks, Steve, you speak the truth in love… so refreshing in a world that doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings,” added Ryan Ovenden of Sioux Falls.

The Argus Leader refused to publish Hickey’s letter. But he has nonetheless received widespread national attention, including a phone call from a New York reporter, according to Hickey.

“The reporter in New York asked me if I was aware that anal sex is practiced by heterosexual couples too,” Hickey wrote on Facebook. “I said yes, and what do docs say about that?… That’s the point of my letter. Hate to step on anyone’s fun but anal sex is a perversion of nature… and self-respecting women ought to stand up and say no way José.”

The Argus Leader reports the South Dakota Democratic Party (SDDP) has issued a statement condemning Hickey’s letter as “hateful” and “reprehensible.”

“We all have friends, family and neighbors who are in healthy, loving same-sex relationships,” wrote SDDP executive director Zach Crago. “They are not asking for any special rights, but to be treated with equal dignity and respect.”

Rep. Hickey is also the founding pastor of the Church at the Gate in Sioux Falls.

The Old Testament of the Christian Bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin, to be punished by death. The Old Testament, which contains the laws of ancient Israel, also prescribes death, often by stoning or burning, as the penalty for a range of offenses against the Abrahamic deity figure ‘God,’ including: adultery, lying about one’s virginity (only for females), prostitution, being the victim of rape (for certain females), bestiality, certain incestuous sex acts, blasphemy, worshipping idols, practicing magic, working on Sunday, rejecting ‘God’, cursing one’s parents, being a rebellious son, and drunkenness, to name but a few.
