Sex On Wheels: Spy Emerson’s San Francisco Hook-Up Truck Offers Safe Space for Casual Encounters
It’s one of those “only in San Francisco” phenomena: an erotic-themed rolling art installation dedicated to sexual adventure and exploration.
According to the truck’s website, it’s a “mobile meeting room accommodating intimate relations, available for short-term rentals. Call the Hook-Up Truck when using your favorite mobile dating app for immediate dispatch, or pre-book for festivals, weddings, holiday parties and more.”
The lascivious lorry is a temperature-controlled, private, secured sex suite complete with complimentary birth control and STD preventatives and is camera-ready in case you wish to capture your copulation for dissemination via YouTube.
It’s a “equal opportunity, sex-positive organization” open to everyone age 21 and up who registers with the service online. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a half an hour session will set you back 75 bucks, or about enough to pay for one parking ticket when SFMTA comes a knockin’ when the truck’s-a-rockin’. A five-hour package that includes staff and cleaning crew costs a cool $2,500, perfect for celebrating your tech startup’s IPO or blowing that check you were going to spend paying the rent on your SoMa studio.
A custom-built metal and wood bench covered in stain-resistant vinyl keeps things clean inside, says Emerson.
“The room is designed with cleanliness in mind,” she explained to CBS San Francisco. “Everything is wiped down and cleaned before and after every person. It’s probably cleaner than the BART or any public toilet you’ve used.”
Emerson explained the type of clientele she’s looking for:
“This is a game for adults who want to play with sex,” she said. “You have to be nice, and cool. No drunks! But everyone is welcome to join us. There will be a party going on all the time.”
San Francisco is no stranger to unorthodox sex spaces open for public enjoyment. There’s the long-standing Power Exchange, a club for late-night trysts, as well as popular city-endorsed festivals such as Folsom Street Fair and the associated, but grittier, Up Your Alley, both of which attract tens of thousands of mostly LGBT participants. There’s also One Taste, which teaches orgasmic meditation and other educational courses for singles and couples. But this is the first time anyone can remember that a mobile play space has hit the city’s streets.
The Hook-Up Truck will be crossing the Bay Bridge and rolling into Oakland this weekend for the ever-popular Art Murmur event in Uptown on Friday evening before returning to San Francisco, where Emerson will be on-air with Radio Valencia in the Mission at 10 p.m. Then it’s back to Oakland on Sunday for a party at NIMBY on Amelia Street from 5-9 p.m.
It’s going to be a wild weekend of parties in the Bay Area (that’s how we roll), but time– and faculties– permitting, your faithful correspondent will attempt to check out the Hook-Up Truck and deliver the, ahem, naked truth about this latest addition to the local art scene.
There’s only one pressing question that many locals are undoubtedly asking themselves– Can we expect to see the hookup truck rolling around the playa, offering sex on wheels at five miles per hour, at Burning Man this year?
