Mohammad Arif, Pakistani Cannibal, Ate Dead Newborn Baby
Mohammad Arif was arrested Monday in Darya Khan, a remote village in Punjab province, AFP reports.
Local police raided Arif’s home after neighbors who noticed a foul smell emanating from inside entered and found a severed baby’s head.
Under interrogation, Arif confessed to eating the deceased 2-day-old child after his brother robbed it from a local graveyard.
“Arif has been arrested and he has confessed that his brother brought the dead body of the newborn from the nearby graveyard,” Bhakkar District Police Chief Ameer Abdullah told AFP. “Arif told police that both of them later cooked the dead body and ate it.”
Arif and his brother Farman Ali were arrested in the same village for cannibalism in 2011. In that case, police found the body of a 24-year-old woman who had recently died of cancer at the brothers’ home. They had eaten one of the corpse’s legs.
Local police official Zafar Iqbal told AFP that the brothers’ wives and families had abandoned them and they were living alone in the home.
There is no law against cannibalism in Pakistan. The suspects have been charged with desecrating a dead body and public order offenses. Authorities have launched a manhunt for Ali.
