‘Vampire Trucker’ Timothy Vafeades Accused of Keeping Sex Slaves in His Semitrailer
A Utah truck driver kept two women as sex slaves in his semitrailer for months at a time while traveling the nation, raping them, filing down their teeth and brutally beating them into submission, police said.
The Associated Press reports 54-year-old Timothy Jay Vafeades of Murray appeared in US District Court in Fargo, North Dakota on Wednesday. He will now be transferred to Utah to face charges including kidnapping, transportation for illegal sexual activity and possession of child pornography. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.
According to an arrest warrant filed Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Utah, Vafeades abducted a 19-year-old female relative who had traveled from Florida in May 2013 to work with him on his truck, the “Twilight Express.” When the young woman told Vafeades she wanted to go home, he allegedly strangled her until she passed out and threatened and beat her into submission for the next six months while they traveled around the country.
WHEC reports Vafeades allegedly forced the unnamed victim to have sex with him more than 100 times during her captivity. He allegedly filed down her teeth and forced her to wear a set of false vampire teeth. He also wore fanged vampire teeth and, according to his victim, “had an obsession with vampires,” earning him the nickname “Vampire Trucker.”
Police in Clay County, Minnesota arrested Vafeades last November 26 after noticing bruises on the young woman. They discovered a 1999 restraining order prohibiting him from contacting her.
Following Vafeades’ arrest, a second woman came forward and claimed that she, too, had been a slave on his truck. The unnamed woman said she met Vafeades at a Salt Lake City truck stop in April 2012 and agreed to have dinner with him. When she climbed into his rig, he told her she was going on the road with him. He allegedly beat and sexually abused her for the next four months, telling her she was his “slave” and threatening to kill her should she tell anyone what had befallen her.
In addition to physically and sexually abusing the woman, Vafeades also allegedly forced her to marry him and do all the paperwork for his trucking company, Twilight Express Trucking, without compensation. He also kept her identity documents and forced her to cut and color her hair so she would be more difficult to identify.
According to the Deseret News, police in Otoe County, Nebraska noticed bruises on the woman, who claimed she was forced to lie naked across a bed in the truck while Vafeades beat her with a belt, and separated them. She then reported the abuse to authorities in Florida, where charges are currently pending.
Both of Vafeades’ alleged victims said he possessed and often viewed images of child pornography. Following his arrest in Minnesota, FBI agents in Salt Lake city found “hundreds of photos and videos of child pornography” on his laptop computer.
Court documents revealed that Vafeades has “numerous domestic-related convictions from the 1980s and 1990s,” as well as a conviction for domestic assault in Iowa in 2012. The Daily Beast reported Vafeades was once convicted of brutalizing and choking a woman in front of her four children, ages 4 to 8.
