Long Island Man Steven Errante Accused of Stealing, Raping, Killing Dog
A Long Island man has pleaded not guilty to charges he stole, had sex with, then beat to death a dog with a baseball bat.
Newsday reports 25-year-old Steven Errante of Dix Hills pleaded not guilty in Suffolk County Court on Monday to charges of animal cruelty and larceny. Prosecutors allege Errante stole a Rottweiler-Labrador mix named Beauty from a fenced pen behind a church near his home last October.
UPI reports Errante then allegedly had sex with the dog, and on December 22, he is accused of beating the animal so badly with an aluminum baseball bat that it suffered from head and facial fractures, a broken leg, and other blunt-force injuries. The dog was so badly injured that it had to be euthanized days later.
After his December 27 arrest, Errante confessed that he “basically beat the dog with the bat,” according to court documents.
Errante’s lawyer, Mary-Elizabeth Abbate, requested a psychiatric evaluation for her client. Judge Barbara Kahn granted the request to make sure the defendant doesn’t lack “the capacity to understand the proceedings against him or to help in his defense because of a mental defect of disease.”
Errante appeared in court in December on charges he broke his father’s ribs with a baton before beating the dog with a baseball bat. He is currently being held on $50,000 bail or a $100,000 bond.
