Luis Rodriguez Beaten to Death by Moore, Oklahoma Cops; Officers Seize Witness Cell Phone Video

Luis Rodriguez beatingAn Oklahoma father trying to stop a family altercation was allegedly beaten to death Saturday by multiple responding police officers, three of whom have been placed on administrative leave.

News 9 reports Nair Rodriguez and her daughter Lunahi said they got into an argument at the Warren Theater in Moore around midnight. Nair admits she slapped Lunahi and stormed out of the cinema. Her husband and Lunahi’s father, Luis Rodriguez, followed Nair in an attempt to calm her down.

The family was in the cinema’s parking lot when Moore police officers arrived on the scene and asked to see Luis’ identification. Police spokesman Jeremy Lewis told reporters Luis tried to fight with the responding officers– NewsOK reported two on-duty Moore officers, one off-duty officer and two off-duty state game wardens were present– and was handcuffed.

Lunahi said her father did not resist but was subjected to a sustained police beating. She said she watched with Nair as Luis was beaten to death.

“They jumped on him like he was some kind of killer or drug dealer and beat him up,” Lunahi told NewsOK. “He never fought with the officers, they beat him on his head and that’s how he lost his breath.”

Rodriguez stopped breathing at some point during the incident. Paramedics arrived on the scene but were unable to revive him.

“When they flipped him over you could see all the blood on his face, he was disfigured, you couldn’t recognize him,” Lunahi told News 9.

Lunahi said her mother recorded the brutal beating on her mobile phone camera but police confiscated it. Lewis confirmed officers had seized the phone as evidence.

Nair insisted her husband was only trying to break up the fight she was having with her daughter.

“I told them (police) I hit her and he was just trying to reach me,” the widow told News 9. “Why didn’t they arrest me?”

Rodriguez’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office, where an official autopsy will determine the cause of death. Three officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
