Utah Mormon Trestin Meacham on Hunger Strike Against Gay Marriage

A Utah man is starving himself in protest against same-sex marriage, which was recently legalized in the staunchly conservative state following a federal judge’s ruling.

Trestin Meacham, a 35-year-old Mormon and small business owner, has vowed to forego food until Utah stops allowing same-sex couples to marry. ABC 4 reports Meacham hasn’t eaten in 12 days. He is reportedly surviving “solely on water and an occasional vitamin.” He has lost 25 pounds (11.3 kg).

“You can start a blog and you can complain on social networks until you’re blue in the face and nothing will happen, but actions speak louder than words and I’m taking action,” Meacham told ABC 4.

Meacham wants Utah to exercise the option of nullification, which he claims allows states to nullify federal court decisions by choosing not to comply with them. Last month, US District Judge Robert J. Shelby ruled that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage violated the Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection and due process.

Same-sex couples immediately began marrying in Salt Lake City. The state attorney general’s office lost an appeal to the 10th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver; Utah is now taking its fight against marriage equality to the United States Supreme Court.

Meacham believes that it is “completely pointless” for Utah to try and halt gay marriage through the court system because it is “packed full of activist judges that don’t listen to the Constitution.” The Navy veteran, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the state senate in 2012 on the far-right Constitution Party ticket, believes the United States is “drifting further and further from the government designed by our founders, to something more closely resembling the writings of Karl Marx.”
