A&E Indefinitely Suspends ‘Duck Dynasty’ Star Phil Robertson over Anti-Gay Remarks
The A&E television network has indefinitely suspended the star of its most popular program after he made shockingly anti-gay comments comparing homosexuality to bestiality in a magazine interview.
Robertson, 67, focused on the graphically sexual elements of homosexuality, calling gay sex a “sin” and “not logical.”
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there,” Robertson said. “Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Don’t be deceived; neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers– they won’t inherit the Kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
Robertson also said that “a vagina… would be more desirable than a man’s anus… she’s got more to offer.”
After massive outcry from the public and advocacy groups, Robertson issued a statement that attempted to justify his homophobic commentary by citing his Christian beliefs. It read, in part:
“My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty, and like Him, I love all of humanity.”
Robertson’s statement contained no apology for his anti-gay remarks.
A&E released a statement explaining why the network is suspending Robertson:
“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community.”
Duck Dynasty has become one of the nation’s most popular reality television series, with around 9 million viewers tuning in to the show’s recent Christmas special.
