Pregnant Charlotte Teen Ondrea Stevenson Shot Dead while Sleeping in Apartment
WBTV reports 19-year-old Ondrea Japonica Stevenson, who was reportedly 13 weeks pregnant, was struck by gunfire after someone opened fire into a unit at the Little Rock Apartments on Leake Street in west Charlotte around 2am on Wednesday. It is not known whether Stevenson was targeted, or whether she was an innocent bystander struck by a stray bullet.
Neighbors told reporters the shooter may have been after the father of Stevenson’s child.
The Charlotte Observer reports four shots were fired into Stevenson’s apartment. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say four other women and three children were inside the home when the shooting occurred, but Stevenson was the only one who was hit.
Friend Sarathel Petty, 19, told the Observer that Stevenson was a funny young woman who always tried to cheer up those around her.
“We were in middle school, and we had a keyboarding class early in the morning together, and we would be in there laughing and joking,” Petty said. “That’s what made me keep her close… she was always looking out for everybody, trying to make them smile.”
Stevenson was a recent graduate of Independence High School.
The shooting was Charlotte’s 54th homicide of the year. The neighborhood where Stevenson was killed is particularly dangerous; CMPD records indicate more than 200 crimes have occurred on the block where the shooting took place.
“A lot of stuff happens over here,” neighbor Tasha Davis told WBTV. “And people don’t care.”
Stevenson is at least the third pregnant woman to be shot in the United States in the past week.
Sunday night, a 31-year-old pregnant woman was shot three times in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego, California. She is expected to survive.
Last Friday, 32-year-old Jonathan Turner of Memphis, Tennessee was arrested after allegedly shooting the mother of his unborn child five times. The 5-months-pregnant victim survived by playing dead until her attacker left; the unborn baby died as a result of the incident.
