Report: 400 US Missiles Went Missing During Benghazi Consulate Attack
A former Justice Department attorney who currently represents Benghazi whistleblowers told a Washington, DC talk radio station on Monday that 400 US surface-to-air missiles went missing during last year’s September 11 consulate attack.
In an interview with WMAL, Joe DiGenova, formerly a US attorney for the District of Columbia, said that he was told that some “very ugly people” had stolen the missiles. DiGenova also said that the CIA annex in Benghazi played an important role in the theft.
“I do not know whether [the missiles] were at the annex, but it was clear the annex was somehow involved in the process of the distribution of those missiles,” DiGenova told WMAL’s “Mornings on the Mall” program.
DiGenova said the information about the missile theft “comes from a former intelligence official who kept in contact with people in the special ops and intelligence community.”
“It is pretty clear that the biggest concern right now is that 400 missiles, which have been diverted in Libya and have gotten into the hands of some very ugly people. And they are worried, specifically according to these sources, about an attempt to shoot down an airliner,” he said.
DiGenova, along with his wife and law partner Victoria Toensing, have been representing Benghazi whistleblowers since last year. Newsmax reports their clients include Gregory Hicks, the deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Tripoli at the time of the Benghazi attack, and Mark Thompson, a former Marine who became deputy coordinator for operations in the State Department’s counterterrorism division.
Last week, Moral Low Ground reported that unnamed CIA sources were alarmed by what they called the Agency’s “unprecedented” efforts to silence operatives who know the “truth” about Benghazi. According to sources, CIA employees are being subjected to monthly polygraph tests in a bid to prevent them from talking to the media about the attack.
There has been much speculation that US operatives were covertly running surface-to-air missiles from Libya through Turkey and into the hands of Syrian rebels fighting to overthrow the Bashar al-Assad regime in a bloody civil war that has claimed more than 100,000 lives since it began in 2011.
