Orange County Deputy Juan Tavera Accused of Pepper-Spraying Unwitting Teen’s Pizza
A Southern California sheriff’s deputy has been arraigned on allegations he pepper-sprayed a teen’s pizza during a routine traffic stop last year.
On September 8, 2012 a different Orange County deputy pulled over a vehicle driven by an unnamed 19-year-old male in Laguna Hills. Tavera arrived at the scene later and saw a pizza in the back seat of the teen’s car. According to prosecutors, Tavera then pepper-sprayed the unwitting young man’s pie.
The alleged victim returned home after the traffic stop and shared the pizza with four of his friends. Everyone who ate the pizza then fell ill. The teen then notified authorities.
If found guilty, Tavera faces up to a year behind bars, the Los Angeles Times reports.
