Iowa Middle School Teacher Benjamin Hoffman Accused of Sexually Abusing Students
The Des Moines Register reports 23-year-old Benjamin Joseph Hoffman, a language arts teacher at Urbandale Middle School in Urbandale, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with 11 counts of third-degree sexual abuse, one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee and two counts of providing alcohol to a minor.
According to West Des Moines police, Hoffman had unlawful sexual contact with a 13-year-old former student as well as a 14-year-old in his class while he was a student teacher at Norwalk Middle School in Norwalk. The alleged illicit contact occurred at Hoffman’s West Des Moines apartment between May and July.
Hoffman has been placed on leave, with Urbandale Superintendent Doug Stilwell describing the situation as “shocking and sad on so many fronts.”
The Hoffman case is the latest in a string of alleged illicit sexual abuse of students by teachers and school administrators.
