Currituck County High School Teachers Deborah Underwood & Robert Layden Arrested for Sex with Students
A major scandal has rocked a coastal North Carolina high school as two teachers accused of having sex with students turned themselves in to authorities less than a week after an assistant basketball coach was also arrested under similar suspicion.
WTKR reports Robert Douglas Layden and Deborah Dawn Underwood, both teachers at Currituck County High School in Barco, surrendered to police and confessed to having sex with students.
The Virginian-Pilot reports Underwood, 33, of Moyock, was a substitute at CCHS in 2011-2012 and has been charged with three sex offenses involving the same student. In a separate case, Layden, 29, of Tyner was charged with a single sex offense with a student.
Just last week, former CCHS volunteer girls’ basketball coach Nicholas Webster Cahoon was arrested for “taking indecent liberties” with a female student.
Currituck County Schools Superintendent Allison Sholar told reporters the fact that three CCHS staff were arrested in one week was a coincidence and that the district “aggressively investigates any reports we receive.”
The CCHS arrests are the latest in a string of recent headline-grabbing cases of inappropriate student-teacher relationships.
Last Friday, Ohio high school teacher Julie Hautzenroeder was indicted on two counts of sexual battery over an alleged illicit sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student at Colerain High School in Colerain Township.
Hautzenroeder’s indictment came just days after Shannon Fox, an art teacher at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, was arrested and charged with having sex with a student.
