McAlester Police: Clyde Harshaw Kidnapped, Tortured Girlfriend with Hammer, Power Drill
The McAlester News-Capital reports 42-year-old Clyde Harshaw was arrested last week and charged with kidnapping, assault and battery, maiming and rape by instrumentation.
Harshaw allegedly drugged and bound his unidentified girlfriend at his McAlester home earlier this month, holding her captive for five days of hellish torture. The suspect allegedly cut his victim with a knife before pouring acid over her wounds, used a power drill to rip out her hair, and beat her legs with a hammer.
“He had actually taken the claw of the hammer and hit her in the knees and legs with it,” Pittsburg County Sheriff Joel Kerns told reporters.
KOTV reports Harshaw also allegedly cooked methamphetamine and injected his victim with it in order to test the dangerous drug’s strength. Police allege that the woman’s refusal to purchase pseudoephedrine, one of the key ingredients used to make meth, set off the horrific chain of events.
Harshaw’s girlfriend was able to escape from captivity on July 10 while her alleged abductor was burning her clothes. A passing motorist gave her a ride to a local police station; Harshaw was arrested two days later.
Sheriff Kerns told KTUL that it was one of the more extreme cases he’s ever seen.
