Houston Teacher Kelly Ann Garcia Accused of Inappropriate Relationship with 16-Year-Old Female Student
Kelly Ann Garcia, 29, an English teacher at Hastings High School in Houston, has been charged with indecency with a child and sexual assault of a child. The alleged victim is a 16-year-old girl who, according to KHOU, met Garcia through a mutual friend. The two reportedly grew close, with Garcia staying after school with the girl to help her work on a class project that did not involve her.
According to court documents, their relationship crossed a line over Spring Break this year, when the two went to a Starbucks and Garcia told the girl she’d had a romantic dream about her. About a week later, Garcia allegedly texted the girl, informing her that she’d broken up with her boyfriend. Garcia and the girl allegedly expressed their romantic feelings for each other.
The next day, Garcia picked the girl up and drove her back to the teacher’s apartment, where they allegedly kissed passionately all evening. The next day, Garcia allegedly took the girl to an adult boutique and purchased a sex toy.
“The allegation is that they did in fact drive to a store and purchase a sex toy and drive back to the defendant’s apartment where they engaged in sex,” prosecutor Markay Stroud alleged.
Garcia is accused of having a sexual relationship with the underage girl over the next several days. The teen then allegedly boasted about her relationship with Garcia to other students, one of whom informed school administrators. The teacher was soon under investigation, but allegedly continued carrying on the illicit relationship with the 16-year-old regardless.
The girl’s father reportedly caught the two together in a local park on May 21, but Garcia allegedly ran off when he tried to confront her.
“She seemed nice at the time. She said she wanted to mentor my daughter, and I took her for her word. Now I’m just not as trusting in people,” the 16-year-old’s mother told KHOU. “She just barely turned 16. At that age, you don’t know what you’re doing, what you’re getting yourself into,” she added.
In addition to the receipt from the sex shop and phone and text records, investigators also claim to have a photo of Garcia and the girl kissing.
Hastings students expressed their shock at the alleged relationship.
“Actually, I just thought it was a rumor, people just making rumors and stuff but it turned out to be true,” Herman Williams, a Hastings senior, told KHOU. “Pretty shocked about it. She knew better.”
“It didn’t seem like she would do that. I don’t think she would actually do that to a student,” junior Kevin Canales added.
KHOU reports that Garcia posted a $60,000 bond on Thursday.
Alief ISD told reporters that Garcia was fired in March when the investigation began.
