NBC News reports that 23-year-old Esteban J. Smith, a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, went on a deadly shooting rampage spanning two Texas counties before being killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers early Sunday morning.
According to ABC News, Smith is also a suspect in the shooting death of a woman whose body was found in a Jacksonville, North Carolina motel room on Sunday.
At around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Smith opened fire from his pickup truck as he drove through Eden, Texas. One woman was injured.
Smith then stopped at a convenience store in Brady, McCulloch County, where he shot and wounded two people sitting in a vehicle. He then drove back to Eden, where he shot at another vehicle at around 5:30 a.m, resulting in another injury.
Then, shortly after 6:00 a.m., Smith shot dead 41-year-old Alicia Torres as she sat in her car in Eola in northwestern Concho County.
Approximately 15 minutes later, Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane located Smith north of Eden on US Highway 83. Smith opened fire on Doane, striking the sheriff and wounding him as state troopers rushed to the scene. A state trooper and a game warden engaged in a firefight with Smith, fatally wounding the suspect.
Officers recovered an ‘assault’-style semi-automatic rifle, a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
WITN reported that the North Carolina victim’s body was found in the Sunset Inn in Jacksonville hours after the Texas shooting incident.
