Disgusting “F’N Wook” Facebook Page Degrades Female Marines

A Facebook page glorifying violence against female Marines was shut down after a US congresswoman brought it to the attention of Pentagon commanders.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) sent a letter to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and other top brass alerting them to the existence of “a disturbing Facebook page” titled “F’N Wook” (“wookie” is derogatory Marine Corps slang for a female Marine) that featured misogynist memes that are sexually degrading and make fun of violence against women.

Set to a background photo of a woman’s breasts, “F’N Wook” displayed a photo of a female Marine with a black eye, with the caption “she burned the bacon only once.” A photo of a semi-naked woman hog-tied to a kitchen counter is accompanied by the caption, “I left the kitchen. Once.” Another photo is captioned “this is my rape face.” Yet another reads “lesbian– still goes down on gunny (gunnery sergeant) for promotion.”

Rep. Speier wrote that “the ‘humor’ expressed on this page… contributes to a culture that permits and seems to encourage sexual assault and abuse.”

“Many of the pictures imply women only advance professionally by performing sexual favors and otherwise promote the idea that women are inferior and only useful as sexual objects and sandwich makers.”

Speier alleges that “not only is the Marine Corps Inspector General aware of this page and monitoring it, but they have been doing so for over three years.” The congresswoman then mentions the rising number of military sexual assaults and a newly-released Pentagon report that estimates there were more than 26,000 such assaults in the military last year– an average of 70 each day.

“The military cannot eradicate this problem without fundamentally changing its approach, including its tolerance of participation in these kinds of websites,” Speier wrote in the letter.

NBC Bay Area reports that USMC Capt. Eric Flanagan responded to Speier’s letter by claiming to have identified and punished “active Marines doing inappropriate posting on social media.” Flanagan insisted that there is “no tolerance for discriminatory comments” such as the ones made on “F’N’ Wook.”

The page, which had more than 10,000 ‘likes’ before it was taken down, reportedly reappeared on Thursday, with many of the same images as before. It also mocked Congress, Raw Story reports.
