A liberal student activist in Wyoming has been caught in an Internet rape threat hoax apparently designed to smear conservatives.

The Laramie Boomerang reports that Meg Lanker-Simons, a student at the University of Wyoming, was cited for misdemeanor interference for allegedly posting a fake rape threat on a Facebook page called ‘UW Crushes.’

“I want to hate f— Meg Lanker Simons so hard,” the post read. “That chick that runs her liberal mouth all the time and doesn’t care who knows it. I think it’s hot and it makes me angry. One night with me and she’s gonna be a good Republican bitch.”

The Facebook post caused widespread outrage at UW, with campus police launching an investigation and university officials condemning it.

UW campus police claim to have “substantial evidence” proving Lanker-Simons posted the hoax message, including an alleged confession.

“Subject admitted to making a controversial post on UW Crushes web page and then lied about not doing it,” the young woman’s police citation alleges.

Despite the latest news, some people are standing by Lanker-Simons.

“I will tell you, I believe Meg is innocent of this outrage,” Pamela Kandt, co-convener of the Episcopal Women’s Caucus in Casper, told the Boomerang. Kandt called the police citation a “classic case of blaming the victim.”

“Meg Lanker-Simons Is Innocent” page has also appeared on Facebook.

It had 33 ‘likes’ as of noon Thursday, but there were hundreds of outraged comments by detractors slamming everything from Lanker-Simons’ professed innocence to her looks and her patriotism. Supporters were few and far between.

MailOnline reports that Lanker-Simons is also a blogger and local radio show host who advocates for progressive causes. In 2010, she sued UW to allow 1960s radical and Weather Underground co-founder Bill Ayers to speak on campus.

If found guilty, Lanker-Simons could face up to a year behind bars and up to a $1,000 fine.
