A high school teacher and girls’ basketball coach has been arrested and charged with raping an underage female student.

Courtney Louise Jarrell, 22, a former first-year math teacher at Riverton High School in Riverton, was charged last Friday with first-degree felony object rape and second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse.

Jarrell had been on administrative leave since the accusations against her first surfaced a month ago. She has since resigned, Jordan School District spokeswoman Sandy Riesgraf said.

According to court documents, Jarrell engaged in illegal sexual activity with a 17-year-old female Riverton High student between February and March of this year. Prosecutors allege that the illicit acts occurred at Jarrell’s home.

Jarrell was described as a popular teacher by shocked RHS students.

“Everybody loved her,” student Kathryn Orchard told KSL. “My parents were even way shocked because my parents loved her too. They thought she was a great teacher.”

Jarrell is scheduled to appear in court on May 16.
