7-Year-Old Kansas Boy Gavin Brummett Dies after Accidentally Shooting Himself
A 7-year-old central Kansas boy has died a day after accidentally shooting himself in the head while handling a pistol with his father and brothers.
Gavin Brummett of rural Salina shot himself around 5:45 p.m. on Friday while shooting with Rodney Brummett, Jr., his father, and his two brothers. The Salina Journal reports that Saline County Sheriff Glenn Kochanowski has confirmed that Brummett shot himself while handling a Master Piece Arms .9 mm semiautomatic handgun.
The slain boy’s father said he heard two shots in rapid succession before seeing his fallen son. The boy was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KSAL reports. Brummett died of his injuries at 6:44 p.m. on Saturday.
Police are investigating the boy’s death. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Monday.
Brummett is the latest victim in a nationwide string of accidental shootings involving children. Among the dead:
– Brandon Holt, age 6, died after being shot in the head by his 4-year-old neighbor and playmate on April 8.
– On April 6, Josephine Fanning, 48, the wife of a Wilson County, Tennessee sheriff’s deputy, was shot and killed by her 4-year-old nephew during a family cookout.
– On March 30, 4-year-old Rahquel Carr was shot while sitting in a car in her grandparent’s driveway in Northwest Miami-Dade, Florida. Carr died shortly after being airlifted to a local hospital.
