Brandon Holt, 6-Year-Old New Jersey Boy, Dies after Being Shot by 4-Year-Old Playmate
A 6-year-old New Jersey boy who was accidentally shot in the head by his 4-year-old friend on Monday has died in a Monmouth County hospital.
Brandon Holt of Toms River was shot by his 4-year-old friend and neighbor, who had found a .22 caliber rifle under a bed in his home. Holt had been sitting in an all-terrain vehicle near his home when he was shot. It is unclear whether the boy pulled the trigger or if the gun accidentally discharged. The shooter’s father immediately took the gun away from him while his mother dialed 911.
Police removed several additional weapons from the home of the shooter’s parents.
The gravely injured boy was airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune with a head injury. He was listed in very serious condition on Tuesday and died at 5 p.m.
“Unfortunately, it’s a tragic accident,” Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy told reporters. “Right now what we want to concentrate on is working with the family and helping them through this difficult time.”
“It’s really difficult to deal with,” Daniel Watkins, the slain boy’s uncle, told CBS New York. “This is something that shouldn’t have happened. It’s horrible.”
As of Tuesday evening, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
Holt’s was the latest in a string of accidental shooting deaths involving children across the United States. On March 30, 4-year-old Rahquel Carr was shot to death while sitting in a car parked in her grandparents’ driveway in Northwest Miami-Dade, Florida.
On Saturday, 48-year-old Josephine Fanning, the wife of a Wilson County, Tennessee sheriff’s deputy, was shot and killed by her 4-year-old nephew during a family cookout.
