Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert Compares Gay Marriage to Bestiality
A Republican US congressman from Texas has become the latest prominent conservative to compare same-sex marriage to bestiality.
Rep. Louie Gohmert was discussing gun laws during a February 14 conference call with the right-wing group Tea Party Unity when, according to Right Wing Watch, he linked laws limiting large-capacity magazines with the debate over marriage equality. He said:
“I had this discussion with some wonderful, caring Democrats earlier this week… they said ‘surely you could agree to limit the number of rounds in a magazine, couldn’t you?’ And I pointed out, well, once you make it 10 (rounds), then why would you draw the line at 10? What’s wrong with nine? Or 11? And the problem is once you draw that limit.
It’s kind of like marriage when you say it’s not a man and a woman anymore. Then why not have three men and one woman, or four women and one man, or why not somebody has a love for an animal? There is no clear place to draw the line once you eliminate the traditional marriage. And it’s the same once you start placing limits on what guns can be used; then it’s just really easy to have laws that make them all illegal.”
This isn’t Rep. Gohmert’s first controversial statement. The Tea Party favorite raised eyebrows last summer when he attributed the Aurora, Colorado movie theater massacre in which James Holmes, using weapons including a semi-automatic ‘assault’-style rifle with a 100-round magazine, killed 12 people and injured 58 others, to “ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs” and too few guns.
Gohmert also made the outlandish claim that Islamic terrorists were sending pregnant women to the United States to give birth to “terror babies” who would then carry out terrorist attacks on US soil when they grew up.
Gohmert is also not the first conservative to falsely link same-sex marriage to bestiality. Then-Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) did it 10 years ago. Dr. Ben Carson, the right’s new darling, did it on Fox News’ “Hannity” last week. Ronald Reagan’s son did it yesterday. Conservative linkage between gay marriage and bestiality has become so common that comedian Jon Stewart dedicated a segment of Wednesday’s “Daily Show” to skewering those who make such comparisons.
“What is it with you people and the animal fucking?” Stewart railed. “I don’t understand how your mind always goes there!”
“You get that one of those things is not like the other, right? It’s like saying, ‘I believe the law grants the same rights to all of us– whether we be Christians or rapists.’ It’s nothing to do with anything,” Stewart said.
