10-Month-Old Adam Bass Accidentally Shot Dead by Father in Tennessee Hotel Room
A 10-month-old baby boy was shot dead by his father in an apparent accident in a Tennessee hotel room on Thursday evening.
The Tennessean reports that police were called to the Extended Stay America hotel on Elm Hill Pike in Donelson, 9 miles west of Nashville, around 6:40 p.m.
Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters that the infant, Adam Bass, had been shot in the chest and could not be revived by CPR. According to WKRN, the baby’s father, 30-year-old Larry Bass from Texas, was handling a semiautomatic pistol when it accidentally discharged, fatally injuring Adam.
“There’s been some suggestion that there was a mechanical problem with the gun,” Aaron told reporters.
The slain child’s mother, 28-year-old Jacquelin Bass, as well as the couple’s two other sons, ages 2 and 3, were also in the hotel room at the time of the shooting. They were all unharmed.
“The parents are very, very distraught over what’s happened, and the police department does not believe this was an intentional act,” Aaron said. “You’ve got to imagine the impact, psychologically, that something like this has on a parent.”
The family was reportedly in the Nashville area because Larry is an iron worker employed building the new Music City Center.
An investigation is underway.
Bass was the third person to be shot to death in 24 hours in Nashville.
Adam’s death comes just three days after a 6-month-old girl was killed in a drive-by shooting as her father changed her diaper in front of their Chicago home.
