Nhan Lap Tran Charged with Murder in Shooting Death of 9-Year-Old Minnesota Boy Devin Aryal
Minnesota prosecutors have charged a man in connection with the shooting death of a nine-year-old Oakdale boy.
WDAY reports that Nhan Lap Tran, 34, was charged with second-degree murder for allegedly committing a random shooting that killed Devin Aryal and wounded his mother and another woman while they were driving in Oakdale on Monday night.
KMSP reported that Missy Aryal was driving on Seventh Street in Oakdale, an eastern suburb of St. Paul, on her way home from work after picking her son up from day care. Suddenly, Aryal heard a sound and then felt blood running down her arm. Turning around, she noticed young Devin slumped over in his seat.
“I saw the wound in his head, so I knew,” she told KMSP. “He wasn’t talking or anything.”
“I was just holding his head in my arms until the ambulance came, just crying hysterically and I just kind of held onto him,” she added.
Devin, who had been shot in the head, took his last breath in his mother’s arms.
“I told him ‘I love you, hold on,” and I just kept screaming for more help,” Aryal told KMSP. “He was a remarkable boy. He loved life, he loved everybody. Everybody loved him.”
Missy Aryal was treated in a local hospital.
According to police, Tran was randomly shooting at passing cars on Monday night. No motive has been determined.
“This senseless shooting has got to stop,” Aryal said. “He was just a baby. A little child, gone.”
Devin Aryal was a fourth grade student at Oakdale Elementary School. He enjoyed playing soccer and studying math and science. He dreamed of becoming an astronaut when he grew up. Oakdale Superintendent Patty Phillips told KMSP that “there were a lot of tears and a lot of emotions (at school)” after students and faculty learned of Aryal’s death. “This student has been a part of our Oakdale family for many years, so we’re feeling the loss very deeply,” Phillips added.
