Mayra Nunez Shoots Her 3 Children, Killing 2, in Denver Murder-Suicide

Mayra NunezA Colorado mother allegedly shot her three children, killing two of them, before turning the gun on herself in the family’s Denver home early Wednesday morning.

9News reports that Mayra Nunez, 23, allegedly shot and killed her son Eric, who would have turned 2 soon, and his 6-year-old sister Neveah at the family’s home on the 4900 block of North Pearl Street. Nunez also allegedly shot her daughter Isabel, age 3, who according to the Denver Post was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center where she underwent surgery and is now listed in critical condition. After shooting her children, Mayra allegedly turned the gun on herself, pulling the trigger and ending her life.

According to ABC 7, police were first notified of the deadly shooting at around 6:55 a.m. on Wednesday.

Tony Nunez, Mayra’s older brother, told 9News that his sister had gotten into an argument with her husband, identified by the Denver Post as Ricky Perez, the night before the deadly shooting. Tony offered to come and get his sister, but she insisted that everything was fine.

“No, no, we’re fine, just a married couple thing,” Mayra reportedly told him. “We have our discussions like everybody.”

“Maybe I should have [come to get her],” Nunez told 9News. “Maybe I would have changed things.”

McArthur Mitchell and Joann Cobb, who live nearby, told the Denver Post that the family was “friendly.”

“They were friendly, we didn’t hear them fighting,” Cobb said. “I’m in such a shock. They were just a happy little family.”

There have been several murder-suicides involving parents shooting their own children in recent weeks.

On Saturday, 45-year-old Isidro Zavala forced his wife, 28-year-old Victoria Flores Zavala, to watch as he strangled and shot the couple’s two sons, ages 2 and 11, before shooting himself dead in their Boynton Beach, Florida home.

On January 21, Las Vegas Metro Police Lieutenant Hans Pieter Walters, 52, shot and killed his 5-year-old son Maximillian and his wife, 46-year-old Kathryn Michelle Walters, before killing himself.

And on January 4, 30-year-old Melanie Reyes of Ocala, Florida shot her 6-month-old son Jonah Mendoza dead before turning the gun on herself. Reyes survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound but died later in the hospital.

A retired law enforcement officer, my company, Custody Calculations has been speaking to the issues of crime related to Family Law and the divorce and/or custody process for several years now. My research of ten years has identified that as much as 25% of all crime may be related to this issue.

Homicides, suicides, kidnappings, child abuse, domestic violence, violence of restraining orders, violence of court orders, stalking and more. To put just one of those numbers into perspective that is 4,000 homicides a year related to divorce.

This headline is another example of that terrible statistic.
