Trinity RossA 4-year-old Missouri girl shot in the head by her 6-year-old brother earlier this month has been removed from life support.

The Kansas City Star reports that Trinity Ross of Kansas City was declared brain dead last week and was later removed from a ventilator.

Trinity was shot shortly before noon on January 10. Police responding to a call to the girl’s home in the 10500 block of Monroe Avenue found the girl lying on her back on the living room floor with a gunshot wound to her forehead. Two boys, ages 5 and 6, were standing in a corner. The shooting occurred when a 58-year-old woman who was watching the children went outside to get something from her car.

Investigators say Trinity’s 6-year-old brother found the revolver under a jacket lying on a chair, picked it up, pointed it at his sister and pulled the trigger. The woman watching the children told police she was unaware there was a gun in the home.

Trinity had just celebrated her fourth birthday days before she was shot.

Prosecutors have not yet determined whether any charges will be filed.

Neighbor Dan Peters told Fox 4 News that many young children lived in the home where Trinity was shot.

“It really is sad,” he said. “Stuff like this never happens in this neighborhood, so it does come as a shock– especially with all the stuff going on in the news with gun activity and everything. You hear about it, but now that it’s right down the street it’s totally different.”

Trinity is one of many children shot to death in recent weeks.

On Saturday, 6-year-old Navaeh Benson of Cleveland accidentally shot herself in the face. Her father has been arrested and charged in connection with the death.

On Christmas Day, Sincere Tymere Smith, age 2, also accidentally shot himself dead with a gun he found lying on a table in his Conway, South Carolina home. His father has also been arrested and charged for the shooting.

Earlier in December, 3-year-old Ryder Rozier of Guthrie, Oklahoma shot and killed himself with a gun he found in the home of his uncle, a state policeman. No charges have been filed.

On December 30, Justin Brueger, 30, of Bennettsville, South Carolina accidentally shot and killed his 8-year-old son Easton Brueger while cleaning a rifle. The father was charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.

On New Year’s Eve, 10-year-old Aaliyah Boyer of Manheim, Pennsylvania was struck in the head by a stray bulled fired during celebrations. She was taken off life support days later.

Earlier this month, William Paris, 12, of Pleasant Valley, Alabama was accidentally shot to death by his cousin, also 12, who was showing off a shotgun he got for Christmas.
