New Jersey Teen Alisha Colon Shot Dead in Her Kearny Home
A 16-year-old New Jersey girl who was shot dead in her home has become the latest in a string of American children to die from gun violence.
Alisha Colon of Kearny was found dead at 6:20 p.m. on Thursday in the bedroom of her second floor apartment on Belgrove Drive, NBC 4 reports. Colon was shot in the head.
Earlier in the day, police were called to the building where Colon was killed after a report of a fight involving several of the girl’s family members. Police said Colon was not involved in that altercation. Edwin Mendez Jr, 37, of Belleville was arrested for unlawful weapons possession and terroristic threats.
NJ.com reports that police are investigating whether Colon’s death and the earlier fight are related.
Jazzmera Lawson, Colon’s friend and neighbor, said the victim was “a really sweet girl.”
“She doesn’t really get into trouble,” Lawson told NBC 4.
Colon is the latest child victim of gun violence in the United States.
On Thursday, Kaewaun D. Coleman, 15, was shot dead during an after-school fight involving 50 or more teens in Columbus, Ohio.
On Wednesday, 17-year-old Tyrone Lawson was shot and killed as he ran from a fight that started after a high school basketball game.
And on Tuesday, Michelle Adrian, 17, of Middletown, Maryland was shot and killed in Baltimore while allegedly trying to purchase drugs.
