A California woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her boyfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, who she allegedly forced to ingest chili powder.

Amanda Sorensen, 21, of Apple Valley was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death.

According to KTLA, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on on 20000 block of Cayuga Road around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday. A child was reported having a seizure after ingesting child powder.

Police believe that Sorensen may have forced the girl, who police say is her boyfriend’s daughter, to eat the spicy chili as punishment.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed to determine the precise cause of death.

Neighbors told KTLA that they had previously witnessed Sorensen being abused by her boyfriend in the home.

“The fight like crazy,” said one man. “I went over there one day to help with the car. She came out asking when he was going to get done so they could get the kids from school. He just flew off the handle and smacked the dog out of her.”

Sorensen is being held on $500,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Chili peppers can kill even full-grown adults. In 2008, 33-year-old aspiring chef Andrew Lee died of heart failure after preparing a particularly hot chili.
