Father of India Gang-Rape Victim “Wants the World to Know” Daughter’s Name: Jyoti Singh Pandey
The father of an Indian girl who was viciously beaten and gang-raped while riding on a bus and who later died of her horrific injuries says he “wants the world to know” the girl’s name.
Badri Singh Pandey identified his 23-year-old daughter as Jyoti Singh Pandey. The physiotherapy intern died in a Singapore hospital 13 days after she and a male friend were attacked by a mob on New Delihi bus on December 16.
“I am proud of her,” Pandi, who spoke in his ancestral village of Billia in Uttar Pradesh, said. “Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks. They will find strength from my daughter.”
While Pandey wanted his daughter’s name to be revealed, he has requested that photos of her not yet be published.
Pandi said he has no desire to see the faces of the six men accused of attacking his daughter, but he does want to see them hanged.
“Death to all six of them,” Pandi fumed. “These men are beasts. They should be made an example of and that society will not allow such things to happen.”
Jyoti’s rape caused massive protests in the Indian capital that brought tens of thousands of people into the streets demanding justice for the victims and improvements in women’s safety in a country where rape has been called an epidemic.
Jyoti and a male friend, 28-year-old Awindra Pandey, had just left a New Delhi cinema where they saw Life of Pi on December 16 when they were lured onto a bus. Five men and a boy, using the bus’ tinted windows and curtains to conceal their actions, brutally attacked the pair. The men, who were allegedly drunk, beat Awindra and beat and gang-raped Jyoti, an assault in which the bus driver also allegedly participated. The driver allegedly rammed an iron rod inside her, causing massive internal organ damage that led to her death. The youngest of the attackers was allegedly the most brutal. The juvenile is accused of ripping out the woman’s intestines with his bare hands while she was being raped. It was also allegedly the boy’s idea to strip the couple naked and throw them from the moving bus after the attack.
The victims screamed throughout the nightmarish ordeal, but nobody on the crowded city streets did anything to assist them.
“They beat us up, hit us with iron rod, snatched our clothes and belongings and they threw us off the bus on a deserted stretch,” Awindra, who suffered a broken leg in the attack, recalled.
“From where we boarded bus, they moved around for nearly two and a half hours. We were shouting, trying to make people hear us,” he continued. “But they switched off the lights. We tried to resist them. Even my friend [Jyoti] fought with them, she tried to save me. She tried to dial police control room number 100, but the men snatched the mobile.”
Jyoti was flown to a hospital in Singapore for treatment. He injuries were so severe that her intestines were removed.
“She had a feeding pipe in her mouth making it difficult for her to speak,” Badri said. “But she did write on some paper that she wanted to live, she wanted to survive and stay with us.”
“But it was fate that had the last say in the end,” he said. His daughter died 13 days later.
The alleged ringleader of the attack has been identified by police as Ram Singh. His brother, Mukesh, is also among the suspects. The six suspects have been charged with murder, rape and kidnapping; prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
