Sonny Archuleta Kills 3 in Aurora, Colorado Shooting
An early morning standoff ended in the deaths of four people after a gunman took four hostages and barricaded himself inside an Aurora, Colorado home on Saturday.
The Denver Post reports that the gunman repeatedly shot at police during a tense six-hour standoff before SWAT officers shot and killed the suspect or he killed himself. Upon entering the townhouse, located on the 16000 block of East Ithica PLace, officers found two men and a woman shot dead on the first floor of the home.
The gunman has been identified as 33-year-old Sonny Archuleta. His victims have been identified as Anthony Ticali, Archuleta’s father-in-law, Stacie Philbrook, and her boyfriend, whose identity has not yet been released. The gunman’s wife, Stephanie Archuleta, escaped unharmed.
Archuleta had been barricaded inside the townhome since 3 a.m. Police were notified after neighbors heard gunshots. Officers evacuated neighboring homes as the standoff progressed.
SWAT teams attempted to negotiate Archuleta’s surrender but after it became apparent that he had no intention of doing so, chemical agents were deployed and the gunman was shot dead after firing at officers from a second-floor window. It is not yet certain whether police killed Archuleta or he shot himself.
“We’re just getting in there with our crime scene detectives, so obviously we’ll have to determine if it was our rounds or his rounds,” Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson told reporters.
Archuleta has been in trouble with the law before. According to CBS Denver, he was arrested last year for reckless endangerment. He also has been charged for carrying a concealed weapon and prohibited use of a weapon.
Aurora, a city of 332,000 people just east of Denver, was the site of last year’s cinema shooting which left 12 people dead and dozens more wounded after gunman James Holmes opened fire during a screening of the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises.
