Ocala Police: Mom Melanie Reyes Kills 6-Month-Old Son Jonah Mendoza, Shoots Herself
A Florida woman is hospitalized in critical condition after shooting her 6-month-old son to death then turning the gun on herself on Friday morning.
WKMG reports that 20-year-old Melanie Reyes of Ocala had posted on Facebook her intention to kill herself and her 6-month-old son, Jonah Mendoza. Family members who saw the threat called 911 around 11 a.m., but by the time police arrived at Reyes’ home on NW 45th Court it was too late.
Officers responding to the call found both Reyes and Mendoza with gunshot wounds and rushed them to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment. The baby was later pronounced dead; Reyes is now expected to survive.
Detectives are interviewing neighbors and family members in an attempt to determine why Reyes would kill her young son.
