Obama May Respond to White House Petition to Build Moon-Sized Death Star

Better call it the 'Debt Star'...

Better call it the ‘Debt Star’…

A petition urging the US government to construct a moon-sized Death Star like the one in the popular “Star Wars” films has collected enough signatures to qualify for a response from President Obama.

The petition on the official White House website urging the government to “secure resources and funding, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016” has collected 27,788 signatures as of Friday afternoon, 2,788 more than required for a response from the president.

“By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration and more, and strengthen our national defense,” the petition states.

Although the petition has gathered enough signatures to warrant an answer from the White House, it is unclear if President Obama, who has the last word on which petitions to consider, will dignify the proposal with a response.

Besides the technological obstacles standing in the way of building a moon-sized space station, especially considering the moribund state of the US space program, there’s also the issue of cost. With the United States’ national debt larger than the nation’s GDP, perhaps ‘Debt Star’ would be a more appropriate name for the proposed project.

As, ahem, far out as the idea of building a Death Star may sound, the United States has actually planned for space domination for many decades. There was, of course, Ronald Reagan’s notorious ‘Star Wars’ space-based laser missile defense boondoggle in the 1980s. A 2000 blueprint for US global– and space– domination drawn up by the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), a far-right group whose members include Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, John Bolton and Jeb Bush, called for American control of outer space via a newly-created US Space Forces.

A 2004 Air Force plan called for “deception, disruption, denial, degradation and destruction” in outer space as part of a recommendation by then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to develop space-based weapons.

The US has also been developing– and testing– the X-37B space drone, which some observers believe is a prototype for a ‘precision global strike vehicle’– a space bomber— that can strike from the heavens anywhere on earth within 90 minutes of receiving orders to attack.

Then there was that lunatic plan to nuke the moon to scare the Sputnik out of the Russians…
