14-Year-Olds Marcus Velasquez & Todavia Cleckley Allegedly Murdered Young Mom Kayla Peterson over Cigarettes
Two Pennsylvania teens implicated in the shooting death of a woman over a pack of cigarettes posed for menacing photos with guns which they posted on Facebook just hours after allegedly killing their victim.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Todavia Cleckley and Marcus Velasquez, both 14 and both still at large, have been charged with conspiracy to commit criminal homicide for the killing of 22-year-old Kayla Peterson of Beaver Falls.
Velasquez has also been charged with criminal homicide, two felony counts of aggravated assault and two counts of reckless endangerment.
Police say the boys will be tried as adults in the killing.
According to police, the boys got into an argument with William Bailey, Peterson’s boyfriend, after following him home from a local convenience store around 3 p.m. on Saturday. The boys allegedly asked Bailey for cigarettes, sparking the argument that ended in gunfire when Velasquez allegedly pulled out a gun and shot across a street where Peterson was standing. The young mother was struck once in the abdomen and died around 5:25 p.m. after being airlifted to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
According to WTAE, Bailey held Petersen in his arms as she died, telling him that she loved him and their 23-month-old daughter.
“She didn’t even move when it happened,” Bailey said of the shooting. “She just said, ‘I can’t feel my legs.’ She wanted to lay down, so I laid her down.”
A third boy, 13-year-old Kyle Goosby, was present during the confrontation but fled when he saw the gun come out.
“He didn’t want any part of that,” Bailey told TimesOnline.
Less than 12 hours after the fatal shooting, a photo of the boys menacingly brandishing two guns; a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol, was posted on Cleckley’s Facebook page. It is not clear whether the either of the guns fired the bullet that killed Peterson.
Beaver County Police Chief Charles R. Jones, Jr. said that Cleckley and Velasquez are “no strangers” to local law enforcement. “We’ve dealt with them before,” Jones told the Post-Gazette.
The two boys remained on the run as of Monday afternoon.
“They’re armed and dangerous,” Chief Jones told the Post-Gazette. “I’d like to see them off the street.”
