Black Florida Teen Jordan Davis Shot Dead by Michael Dunn in Jacksonville Parking Lot, Allegedly over Loud Music

November 28, 2012 by Brett Wilkins in Crime & Punishment with 1 Comment

A white Florida man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly firing eight or nine shots into a car full of black teens after an argument over loud music, killing one of them.

The Florida Times-Union reports that 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis of Jacksonville was allegedly shot and killed by 45-year-old Michael David Dunn of Satellite Beach Friday night in a Gate gas station parking lot on Southside Boulevard in Jacksonville.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Dunn and his girlfriend were in Jacksonville attending a wedding and had stopped at the gas station’s convenience store. According to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Lt. Rob Schoonover, Davis and several other teenagers were sitting in a sport utility vehicle in the parking lot when Dunn pulled up next to them and asked them to turn down their loud music.

Lt. Schoonover said that Davis and Dunn exchanged words, then Dunn pulled out a gun and shot at the car eight or nine times, hitting Davis, who was sitting in the back seat of the SUV, twice. No one else was hit. Dunn and his girlfriend then allegedly drove off, fearing that they had encountered gang members and that more of them would show up. Witnesses recorded their license plate number.

Dunn was arrested Saturday at his Brevard County home and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

CNN reports that Dunn told police that he had felt “threatened” by the teens’ response to his request to turn down their music. Dunn’s lawyer, Robin Lemonidis, told CNN that Dunn saw the barrel of a shotgun in the window of the SUV and that the teens were threatening him and his girlfriend. According to Dunn, as the teens motioned they were opening the door, he reached for his gun and shot in self-defense.

“When all the evidence has been flushed out, I believe that it will be extremely clear that Mr. Dunn acted as any responsible firearm owner would have under the same circumstances,” Lemonidis said.

But no gun was found in the teens’ vehicle.

The case has brought comparisons with the Trayvon Martin shooting, which also occurred in Florida. In February, Sanford neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot and killed Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old black teen as he walked from a store to his grandfather’s home in a gated community. The case, which has not yet gone to trial, brought national attention to so-called ‘stand your ground’ self-defense laws, which allow gun owners to use deadly force when they “reasonably believe such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm” to themselves or others.

Lemonidis said that the two cases are not comparable.

“There are no comparisons to the Trayvon Martin situation,” she told CNN, adding that her client is no “vigilante.”

Ron Davis, the victim’s father, told WAWS that he wants justice served, “whether it be through the legal system or to God.”

“God’s going to punish him for that, so me, I don’t want to do anything to him.”

Jordan Davis will be buried in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia on Saturday.

Please stop calling George Zimmerman a “neighborhood watch volunteer ” or a neighborhood watch captain as he was neither of these. He was a SELF APPOINTED neighborhood watch captain, in other words he was a vigilante. There is a very big difference between being chosen and/or accepted by ones neighbors into a position of authority and appointing oneself to that position unilaterally.
