Obama, Pelosi “Fully Supportive” of Israel’s Rape of Gaza
Despite what Republican reactionaries would have you believe, President Barack Obama stands fully behind Israeli crimes against humanity in Gaza and elsewhere, including the physical, economic and psychological destruction of the Palestinian people.
While visiting Thailand, Obama predictably declared that the United States is “fully supportive of Israel’s right to defend itself” against hundreds of comparatively crude projectiles fired by Hamas and other Gaza-based militants resisting eight decades of repeated displacement, deprivation, oppression, humiliation and slaughter.
“Israel has every right to expect that is does not have missiles fired into its territory,” the president asserted, practically ignoring the scores of innocent men, women and especially children being massacred by Israeli bombs.
For Obama, the bottom line is clear: “There is no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders,” the president said.
True enough. But what nation would tolerate eight decades of ongoing invasions, occupation, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, economic strangulation, humiliation, torture, rape and murder? This is what the Palestinian people have endured at the hands of Zionists for the better part of the past century. If such events befell your country, what lengths would you go to in order to put a stop to it all?
Many of Israel’s apologists are fond of pointing out that there never was any such thing as the “nation of Palestine.” Former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir even went so far as to declare that “there is no such thing as the Palestinian people,” a dangerous fallacy that reared its ugly head during the most recent Republican presidential primaries when Newt Gingrich called the Palestinians an“invented people.” A learned historian such as Newt must surely be aware that from antiquity until Israel’s independence, that “invented people” comprised the majority of the territory’s population. Until well into the 20th century, the Arabs of what would one day become Israel outnumbered the Jews by more than 9-1.
But the Zionists– European colonists seeking to reestablish the ancient Jewish kingdoms in Palestine– perpetuated the myth of “a land without a people for a people without a land,” and that myth endures to this very day thanks to the ignorance– sometimes willful, sometimes pure– of Israel’s apologists.
Jews, who established their state through colonization, terrorism, war and ethnic cleansing, and maintained and expanded that state through apartheid, more war, more terrorism and more colonization, cast themselves as victims. But the sad truth is that a people who just endured one of the worst ethnic cleansing campaigns in history was doing more or less the same thing to the indigenous Arab population of Palestine. And Israel gets away with it largely because it has the backing of the most powerful nation on earth, which funds Zionist crimes to the tune of $3 billion of our tax dollars each and every year, no matter how many Palestinian or Lebanese babies are killed. By bankrolling Israeli crimes against humanity, not only the US government but also American taxpayers are complicit in those crimes. And we wonder why terrorists want to attack us?
Obama didn’t always see things the way he does today. Once upon a time, an upstart candidate electrified not only the US, but also much of the world– including Palestinians– with lofty pledges of “hope” and “change.” Candidate Obama even offered, if ever-so-fleetingly, the tantalizing prospect of a fundamental shift in US relations with Palestine. Speaking to a small group of Democratic activists in Iowa in 2007, Sen. Obama bravely declared that “nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people.” The world– especially the Muslim world– sat up and took notice.
Alas, it wasn’t long before candidate Obama was brought to heel by the numerous powerful pro-Israel powers-that-be. His “suffering” comment raised Zionist eyebrows and ire from Brooklyn to Beersheba, and the presidential hopeful’s tune soon changed. A year later, with the prize of a political lifetime well within his reach, Obama dashed the hopes of Palestinians by declaring his undying loyalty to the Jewish state. Despite some headline-grabbing spats, the president has proved a steadfast supporter of Israeli wars, occupation, apartheid and continued colonization and ethnic cleansing through illegal settlement building and Arab expulsion.
You need look no further than the remarks of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, supposedly one of America’s most liberal lawmakers who represents San Francisco, the nation’s most progressive major city, to see just how imbalanced America’s approach to Israel truly is:
“With Israel under assault, members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have made it clear: Israel has the right to defend herself as a nation. No Israeli family should be forced to endure constant threats to their lives or the persistent fear of rocket attacks. The targeting of innocent Israelis must end… and we call on Hamas to no longer place civilians in harm’s way.”
Pelosi’s statement is the equivalent of a sadistic rapist kidnapping an innocent girl, then insisting she lay compliant and silent as she’s being violently ass-fucked, kicked around and pissed on. Furthermore, Pelosi enables the rapist by providing him with the Taser he used to stun his victim, the duct tape to restrain her, the condom to hide the evidence of his crime and endless alibis to guarantee his impunity.
Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and every US politician who does not stand against Israeli crimes is complicit in the rape of Gaza.
