NATO Air Strike Kills 3 Afghan Children
A NATO air strike targeting Taliban fighters reportedly killed three children in Afghanistan’s Helmand province on Monday.
Agence France-Presse reports that Afghan officials say one teenage girl and two boys were killed by NATO bombing in Nawa district. NATO warplanes were targeting Taliban resistance fighters planting explosive devices on a road when they attacked, killing what the alliance claims were three insurgents along with the children. A local police official said two insurgents were killed.
“Two Taliban mine planters were identified and targeted by ISAF (NATO’s International Security Assistance Force) from the air and killed,” Nawa police chief Ahmad Shah Khan told AFP. “Three children, two boys and a girl, who were nearby collecting firewood were also killed.”
Helmand police spokesman Farid Ahmad Farhang confirmed that two insurgents and three children were killed.
Thousands of innocent Afghan civilians have been killed each year during the decade-long US-led invasion and occupation of Afghanistan that followed the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the United States. Those attacks were planned and executed by al-Qaeda terrorists led by Osama bin Laden and sheltered by the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban government of Afghanistan. The invasion and occupation ousted the Taliban from power, yet the group remains very strong and is conducting a grinding insurgency in an attempt to drive the foreign invaders from the Afghanistan. The Taliban is to blame for the majority of civilians killed during the course of the war, yet thousands of innocent men, women and children are have been killed by US, NATO and Afghan government forces as well.
Just last month, a NATO air strike killed eight women and girls gathering firewood near their village in Alingar district, Laghman province.
Most innocent Afghans killed by US and NATO forces perish in air strikes, including unmanned aerial drone attacks. The actual number of civilians killed may be much higher than Washington claims; in May it was revealed that the Obama administration had embraced a deceptive method for tallying civilian deaths in which all military-aged males in a drone strike zone are counted as militants regardless of whether or not they really were.
US and NATO killing of innocent Afghans has stoked widespread anti-Americanism throughout the country, aiding insurgent recruitment efforts and even driving Afghan President Hamid Karzai to once threaten to join the Taliban if the invaders did not stop killing civilians.
