A naked University of South Alabama student was shot dead by a campus police officer after the young man allegedly charged at him in a threatening manner.

ABC reports that 18-year-old freshman Gil Collar of Wetumpka, Alabama was killed shortly after 1:23 a.m. on Saturday. At that time, a campus police officer responding to banging on the window of the police station came out and saw Collar, who was not wearing any clothes.

statement from the university said:

When an officer exited the station to investigate, he was confronted by a muscular, nude man who was acting erratically. The man repeatedly rushed and verbally challenged the officer in a fighting stance. The officer with weapon drawn ordered the individual to halt. The officer retreated numerous times in an attempt to calm the situation. The individual continued to press toward the officer in a threatening manner…
When the individual continued to rush toward the officer in a threatening manner and ignored the officer’s repeated commands to stop, the officer fired one shot with his police firearm, which struck the chest of the assailant. The individual fell to the ground, but he got up once more and continued to challenge the officer further before collapsing and expiring.

Local prosecutors are investigating the shooting; the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Collar was a popular wrestler at Wetumpka High School.

“He was very well-liked,” principal Cindy Veazey said. “He had a very charismatic smile.”

Wrestling coach Jeff Glass told the Advertiser that Collar was a “remarkable young man.”

“As phenomenal of an athlete as he was, he was an even better person. There’s no possible way to do justice to what kind of man he was.”

“He was a kind soul,” Glass added. “He was never aggressive to anyone off the mat.”

Another case of “shoot first, ask questions later.” Oh wait, he’s dead, you can’t ask him any questions.

Um, you’re stupid. That cop could have shot him in the leg or something and then in the other leg if he didn’t stop. He didn’t have to kill him he was only 18 and had his whole life ahead of him.

Please. This is a child. We expect that there are other ways to apprehend an unarmed person besides point blank. God bless you, because somewhere a mother is sitting with a broken heart and a broken life right now.
