Citing Leotard Color, Fox News Questions US Gold Medal Gymnast Gabby Douglas’ Patriotism

Gabby Douglas, winner of two gold medals in gymnastics at the 2012 London Olympics, came under fire on Fox News for not wearing a sufficiently patriotic uniform.

On the most recent episode of Fox’s “America Live,” guest host Alisyn Camerota noted that “some folks” weren’t too happy that Team USA’s “yellow shirts, gray track suits and pink leotards” had replaced the “famous flag-styled outfits” of past Olympic teams.

Camerota and guest David Webb, a Tea Partier and host of a right-wing radio program on the SiriusXM satellite radio “Patriot” channel, took aim at Gabby Douglas. Apparently winning gold medals in both the individual and team all-around competitions didn’t bring enough pride to the United States for Webb, who decried what he called “a soft anti-American feeling.”

“What’s wrong with showing pride?” he asked. “What we’re seeing is this kind of soft anti-American feeling that Americans can’t show our exceptionalism.”

“You know what? Red, white and blue. Wear it. Wave it. Be proud to be American,” he added, noting that countries like China wore their national colors on their uniforms.

“There is a meaning behind the red, white and blue that has been lost in time. The field of stars, the blood that’s been shed. And that’s what we need to focus on and get that out in our country,” Webb said.

“We are a very nationalistic nation,” he asserted.
