‘Douche du Jour’: Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) Blames Aurora Massacre on “Attacks on Judeo-Christian Values” and Too Few Guns

A US congressman from Texas claims that the horrific shooting rampage that left 12 dead and 59 wounded at a Colorado cinema Friday morning was the result of “ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs.”

Rep. Louie Gohmert, who represents northeastern Texas in Congress, made his bizarre statement during an interview on the far-right Heritage Foundation’s “Istook Live!” radio show on Friday.

When asked what causes such senseless acts of violence, Rep. Gohmert replied:

“You know what really gets me, as a Christian, is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and then some senseless crazy act of terror like this takes place.”

Gohmert suggested that the Aurora massacre, in which a 24-year-old doctoral student named James Holmes killed 12 people and wounded 59 more during a midnight premier of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises,” was “a terrorist act” which could have been prevented not with more stringent gun control laws but rather with more prayer– of the Judeo-Christian variety.

“People say… where was God in all of this,” he later continued. “We’ve threatened high school graduation participations, if we use God’s name, they’re going to be jailed… I mean, that kind of stuff. Where was God? What have we done with God? We don’t want him around.”

Gohmert also suggested that the tragic massacre could have been avoided if there were more, not less, guns in the world.

“It does make me wonder, with all those people in the theater, was there nobody that was carrying a gun that could have stopped this guy more quickly?”

Colorado law does allow citizens to carry concealed firearms.

This isn’t the first time that Rep. Gohmert has made outlandish statements. In 2010, he made headlines with his “terror babies” accusation: that Islamic terrorists were sending pregnant sympathizers to the US to give birth to babies that would be American citizens, the ultimate sleeper cell that could be activated to commit acts of terror when the children grew up.
