Natalie Plummer, Houston Woman, Arrested and Jailed over ‘Speed Trap’ Sign

A Texas woman was arrested and jailed for 12 hours for standing on the side of a road and holding up a sign warning of a police speed trap.

Natalie Plummer of Houston was riding her bike home last Thursday when she saw police pulling over alleged speeders on West Dallas Street.

“I felt like he was just pulling random cars over,” Plummer told KTRK. She recorded video of the stops while riding by before getting an idea: she would make a sign to warn unwitting drivers of the danger ahead. The intrepid young woman scrawled SPEED TRAP!! on a torn-off piece of paper shopping bag and stood on the side of the street holding her sign up.

“I was completely abiding by the law. I was simply warning citizens of a situation ahead,” Plummer, who says she only wanted to get drivers to slow down, told KTRK.

Local police didn’t see it that way. An officer drove up to her, jumped from his car, tore at her backpack and searched it without consent before arresting her.

“He was telling me he was taking me to jail for obstructing justice, that was an automatic three to five years,” Plummer told KTRK. But she was only cited with a misdemeanor. According to court documents, she was  “…walking in the roadway where there is a sidewalk present.”

Plummer contests that claim.

“I for sure did not step into the street,” she told KTRK. “(I stayed) on the sidewalk the entire time.”

Incredibly, Plummer spent 12 hours in jail for her “crime.”

Although Houston police maintain that Plummer was “in the roadway” and “was a danger to herself and others…the sum total of which was is an arrestable offense,” she contends that the charge was trumped-up.

“He couldn’t take me to jail for holding up this sign or he would have,” she defiantly told KTRK. “So all he could do was make up something fake about it.”

Her best bet is to get the hell out of Texas while she’s alive. It’s no place for a woman. It’s no place for humanity.
