‘American Idiots’: Nearly HALF of Americans Believe God Created Humans Within Last 10,000 Years
A new poll reveals a shocking ignorance of irrefutable scientific fact regarding the age of the human species.
On Friday, Gallup released the results of a survey that revealed nearly half of Americans believe that “God” created modern human beings sometime in the last 10,000 years. Fully 46 percent of respondents espoused this blatantly false creationist view; roughly the same percentage that responded similarly to the same question when Gallup first asked it in 1982.
About a third of respondents said they believe in “God”-driven evolution, and 15 percent said they believed that humans evolved without the participation of a supreme being.
Not surprisingly, responses varied significantly based on respondents’ education levels, political affiliation and participation in religious activities. Two-thirds of those who attend religious services every week said that “God” created humans within the last 10,000 years, while only a quarter of those who rarely or never attended church believe this to be true.
Fully 58 percent of Republicans said they believed the creationist theory, most likely because highly religious Americans are more likely to be politically conservative. Only 41 percent of Democrats and 39 percent of independents shared the creationist viewpoint.
Among Americans with a high school education or less, more than half– 52 percent– said that “God” created modern humans in the last 10,000 years. Only 46 percent of those with a college degree and 25 percent of those with postgraduate degrees believe this to be true. On the other end of the belief spectrum, only 11 percent of those with a high school education or less said they believe humans evolved independently of divine creation, and 29 percent of those with postgraduate degrees said that humans evolved without the help of “God.”
Regardless of Americans’ religious or spiritual beliefs, the notion that modern man suddenly appeared– whether by “God’s” creation or any other means– within the last 10,000 years is demonstrably and irrefutably false. Anatomically modern humans– Homo sapiens– originated in Africa more than 200,000 years ago, the culmination of a long line of hominids dating back more than 5,000,000 years.
By 10,000 years ago, the earliest date at which nearly half the Gallup poll respondents said they believed “God” created modern man, humans were already developing agriculture, bladed tools, houses, temples, granaries, decorated pottery and statues. Potatoes and beans were being grown in South America. Millet and rice were cultivated in East Asia. Wheat, barley, sheep, goats, and pigs were found in Aegean Greece. Ancient Mexicans were constructing burial mounds and crafting pottery. Bible-believers should know that Jericho was a thriving city by that time, proving that humans had developed to the point of relatively advanced urban civilization.
