Colorado Father of 6 Steve Crecelius Goes to Hospital with Kidney Stone… and Finds Out He’s Also a Woman
A Colorado man suffering from a kidney stone got the shock– and relief– of a lifetime when an emergency room nurse informed him that he was also a she.
It turns out that Steve Crecelius, a married father of six children who was in his 50s at the time of the fortuitous kidney stone, was born intersex– he has both male and female sex organs. Speaking with Fox 31 Denver, Steve– who is Stevie now– said the revelation came as a relief.
“We’re in the emergency room… the nurse is reading the ultrasound and says, ‘Huh, this says you’re a female,'” he recalled.
“It validated everything I had always felt inside,” he said of his life-changing discovery.
“I remember wearing my mom’s clothes and makeup,” he recalled from his childhood, “very secretly, not telling anybody.”
But now there are no more secrets.
“It’s so liberating to be able to be and express how I feel inside,” Crecelius told Fox 31.
After that fateful day in the hospital, Steve began transitioning into life as a woman. He– strike that, she– worried about what her family would think.
“How do you tell your kids that, well, it’s no longer dad, it’s dadette?” she told Fox 31. But there was nothing to worry about.
“Within a few minutes, all of them said, ‘I don’t care dad; I love you for who you are.'”
Ditto for wife Debbie. The couple are still together, five years after Stevie learned his true identity.
“I didn’t sign on for this, but who signs on for anything?” she asked Fox 31.
“She’s the same person she was as a he on the inside,” she added.
“She still relates to my heart and soul, and I still relate to hers, and I think that’s the essence of true love,” Stevie said.
The couple even still shares the same bed.
Stevie told Fox 31 that she hopes her story will inspire others to be their true selves.
“I am the luckiest woman in the world,” she said. “I don’t think that there’s any way I could be more blessed.”
