Gay Republicans Slam Mitt Romney’s Liberty University Commencement Speech

Gay Republicans reacted angrily to Mitt Romney’s Saturday commencement speech to the graduating class of 2012 at Liberty University in Virginia.TPM Livewire reports that the gay conservative group GOProud issued a statement slamming Romney’s choice of Liberty University, a Baptist college founded in Lynchburg in 1971 by controversial evangelical pastor and televangelist Jerry Falwell.”Today, Governor Mitt Romney spoke at Liberty University,” the statement from GOProud co-founder Jimmy LaSalvia began.”Liberty was founded by the late Jerry Falwell, who in 2007 said, ‘AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals… AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals,'” it continued.Indeed, Falwell’s animosity towards homosexuals seemed to know no limits; he even attacked the once-popular PBS children’s television program Teletubbies because one of the show’s main characters, Tinky Winky, “is purple – the gay-pride color; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle – the gay-pride symbol.”Romney’s choice of Liberty University coincided with President Barack Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he delivered on Wednesday in an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts.”I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” the president declared. In his Liberty University speech, which focused on family, faith and tradition, Romney drew a sharp contrast with Obama’s approval of gay marriage.”The American culture promotes personal responsibility, the dignity of work, the value of education, the merit of service, devotion to a purpose greater than self, and, at the foundation, the pre-eminence of the family,” the former Massachusetts governor declared.”As fundamental as these principles are, they may become topics of democratic debate. So it is today with the enduring institution of marriage.  Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman.”GOProud’s LaSalvia would prefer if Romney focused on what he believes are much more important issues.”If Governor Romney hopes he can alleviate these concerns and unite the conservative movement by grossly engaging in the culture wars, as he did today at Liberty University, he is sadly mistaken,” his statement said.“It is not too late. If Governor Romney wants to unite conservatives and motivate Tea Party voters then he needs to embrace bolder positions on taxes, entitlement reform, healthcare and spending, not pander to big government theocrats.””Falling into the culture war trap laid by Obama is a guaranteed electoral loser.”
