Prattville, Alabama Judge Sentences LaMarcus Ramsey to 3 Days in Jail for Sagging Jeans
An Alabama man was sentenced to three days’ imprisonment for wearing sagging jeans in a courtroom.
According to the Montgomery Advertiser, 20-year-old LaMarcus D. Ramsey appeared in Autauga County Circuit Court, where he entered a plea deal on a charge of receiving stolen property. But Circuit Judge John Bush did not like the look of the young black man who was clad in “fashionably” low-sagging blue jeans. The judge slapped Ramsey with contempt of court; he will now have to spend three days behind bars in the Autauga Metro Jail.
“You are in contempt of court because you showed your butt in court,” an angry Bush told the young man. “You can spend three days in jail. When you get out you can buy pants that fit, or at least get a belt to hold up your pants so your underwear doesn’t show.”
“To me it’s not any different than if someone stood up in court and started cussing everybody out,” Bush told the Associated Press. “It’s disrespectful conduct and I think as judges we’re expected to at least have some degree of control and respect for the courtroom the people have given us charge of.”
