A Catholic priest in Northern Ireland has come under fire after he “inadvertently” projected images of gay pornography onto a screen during a presentation for parents whose children were preparing for their First Holy Communion.

According to the Ulster Herald, an eight-year-old boy was also present at the March 26 meeting when Father Martin McVeigh, Parish Priest of Pomeroy, County Tyrone, showed 16 pornographic images to parents of students at St. Mary’s Primary School.

According to the BBC, the images came from a memory stick that McVeigh inserted in a computer before the presentation. The priest quickly removed the memory stick when he realized what he’d done.

“He was visibly shaken and flustered,” a parent was quoted by the BBC. “He gave no explanation or apology to the group and bolted out of the room. The co-ordinator and the teachers continued with the presentation… the parents who viewed the pictures were horrified and distracted.”

“Twenty minutes later he returned, he continued with the meeting and wrapped up by saying that the children get lots of money for their Holy Communion and should consider giving some of it to the church.”

The Council for Catholic-Maintained Schools said the incident is being investigated by the Child Protection Office of the Armagh Diocese.

Cardinal Sean Brady of the Archdiocese of Armagh released a statement:

On the evening of Monday, March 26, at a meeting of parents in a primary school in the Archdiocese of Armagh, inappropriate imagery was inadvertently shown by a priest at the beginning of a Powerpoint presentation, causing concern to those present. This was immediately removed from the screen. The priest has stated that he had no knowledge of the offending imagery.

The Archdiocese immediately sought the advice of the PSNI who indicated that, on the basis of the evidence available, no crime had been committed. The priest is co-operating with an investigation of the matter on the part of the Archdiocese.

Father McVeigh said he had no knowledge of the gay porn images.

“As the incident is being investigated, I wouldn’t be able to comment until the investigation is finished,” he told the Ulster Herald. “Hopefully that will be soon. I don’t know how it happened but I know what happened. There are people making innuendoes who weren’t even there but in this day and age these stories grow. All I can do is let the incident be investigated and be open to that investigation so that what happened can be legitimately explained.”
