‘Douches du Jour’: Marcus Higgins, Spike Lee Tweet Wrong ‘George Zimmerman’ Address, Force Elderly Couple into Hiding
An elderly Florida couple has fled their home and gone into hiding in a hotel after a wannabe sleuth tweeted their address, believing it to be that of Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman. The couple’s troubles were compounded after legendary filmmaker Spike Lee retweeted the erroneous address to his legions of followers.
The Smoking Gun reports that 33-year-old Marcus Davonne Higgins of Los Angeles sent the original tweet under the handle @maccapone. He also posted it on his Facebook wall for his 4,000 friends to see.
“FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT AND TOUCH HIM (Zimmerman),” the post read. “REAL TALK MY PEOPLE OUT THERE IN FLORIDA JUST TOLD ME GEORGE ZIMMERMAN IS NOT AT HIS HOUSE THEY OUT THERE RIGHT NOW.”
What that last part means is a total mystery, but the first portion sure seems like an incitement to violence.
For those of you living on Neptune for the past couple of weeks, George Zimmerman is a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain in a Sanford, Florida gated community. On the night of February 26, Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager visiting his father. Zimmerman claims he shot the teen in self defense, and under Florida’s controversial “stand your ground” law, that is perfectly legal. No arrest has been made in the case despite the fact that the lead homicide investigator sought manslaughter charges against Zimmerman.
Marcus Higgins not only tweeted Zimmerman’s address (“like the fat punk he is, he still lives at home with mommie & daddy”), he also attended a protest rally in Los Angeles, where he was seen holding a sign listing Zimmerman’s name, address and phone number.
Trouble is, the information is all bunk.
The real residents of the address disseminated by Higgins and multiplied by a factor of god-knows-how-many after film director Spike Lee retweeted it to his 240,000 followers are an elderly couple who have been forced to flee in fear and hole up in a hotel because of the bumbling vigilanteism.
David McClain, age 72, and his wife Elaine, 70, told The Smoking Gun that they were “afraid” and “keeping everything locked” due to the unwanted attention. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the cafeteria lunch lady who suffers from a heart condition and her husband have moved into a hotel due to the possible danger. The couple has received hate mail, unwanted visits from reporters and other negative attention thanks to the shoddy sleuthing of Higgins and the premature retweeting of one of America’s best-known black celebrities.
Why the screwup? It turns out that Elaine has a son named William George Zimmerman, who is, of course, unrelated to Trayvon Martin’s killer.
“This is really scary, and I’m concerned for my family,” William Zimmerman told the Sentinel. “It’s scary because there are people who aren’t mentally right and will take this information and run with it.”
“To endanger people who are innocent because people are angry is not the answer,” he added. “That’s not how we’re going to heal. It’s not to help the Martin family for someone else to be hurt.”
But instead of apologizing, Higgins has double-douched-down by insisting that the address he originally tweeted was correct. “THAT ADDRESS IS NOT WRONG THEY JUST WANT PEOPLE TO THINK THAT,” he wrote early Wednesday morning.
