Santorum Meltdown: GOP’s Mr. Morality Calls “Bullshit” on NY Times’ Jeff Zeleny
Rick Santorum, the GOP’s “Mr. Morality,” had a momentary meltdown on Sunday when confronted by a reporter seeking clarification of a comment made by the candidate earlier in the evening.
Speaking at the final campaign rally of the weekend at the South Hills Country Club in Racine, Wisconsin, Santorum attacked his rival, former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney. “He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama,” the increasingly desperate Santorum declared.
“Why would Wisconsin want to vote for someone like that?” the former Pennsylvania senator added.
When pressed for clarification on his “worst Republican” comment by Jeff Zeleny of the New York Times, Santorum fumed, “What speech did you listen to? I said he was the worst Republican to run on the issue of Obamacare. That’s what I was talking about.”
“Quit distorting my words. It’s bullshit,” blurted the über-conservative Santorum in an unguarded moment of visceral vexation sure to reverberate throughout the morality-obsessed folks who make up a good chunk of his base.
According to the Associated Press, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams chalked Santorum’s profane snap up to ”panicking in the final stages of his campaign.”
“Rick Santorum is becoming more desperate and angry and unhinged every day,” Williams said. “He sees conservatives coalescing around Mitt Romney and he’s rattled by the backlash caused by his suggestion that keeping Barack Obama would be better than electing a Republican.”
