‘Douche du Jour’: $1 Million Michigan Lottery Winner Amanda Clayton Still Collecting Food Stamps
A Michigan woman who won a million dollar lottery prize has come under fire for continuing to collect food stamps.
Yahoo! News reports that despite winning the massive prize, 24-year-old Amanda Clayton sees nothing wrong with continuing to take government assistance meant for the needy.
“I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn’t, I thought maybe it was OK because I’m not working,” Clayton told Local 4 News in Detroit. Clayton downplayed her lottery winnings, saying she opted for a lump-sum payment, the conditions of which required her to fork over around half her winnings in taxes.
“I feel that it’s OK because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay,” she said. “I have two houses.”
But government assistance, in this case the state-issued Michigan Bridge Card, is meant to help the neediest residents. And in Michigan, there are plenty of them– unemployment stands at 9.3% in the nation’s eighth most economically depressed state. Fully a quarter of Michiganders receive some form of food assistance, and the $200 that Clayton receives each month is food taken from the mouths of children who desperately need it.
Her unconscionable abuse of the welfare system has caught the attention of Republican state Rep. Dale Zorn, who has sponsored a bill that would stop people like Clayton from receiving government assistance.
“Public assistance should be given to those who are in need of public assistance, not those who have found riches,” Zorn told Local 4. His bill has already passed the House. A sister bill before the state Senate would mandate that the state cross-check people who win more than $1,000 in the lottery with a list of welfare recipients.
