White Christian Nationalist & VDARE Founder Peter Brimelow Appears on CPAC Panel on the ‘Failure of Multiculturalism’

The beautiful thing about America is that we’re still pretty much free to say whatever we want and to associate with whomever we please– although tread lightly on that last one; with the new NDAA in place legalizing indefinite military detention of American citizens without charge or trial, I’d watch who I consort with. Seriously, though– in this country, even racist, Islamophobic nationalists who would be better suited in 1930s Germany (or 2010s Russia) can climb atop their soapbox and spew all the hatred they please, so long as they don’t incite violence. That’s the perverse beauty of free speech. It also means that we’re free to fight back against the wave of bigotry and xenophobia and to shine a bright light upon the ugly face of reactionary intolerance whenever and wherever it rears its pathetic head.

“Whenever” happened yesterday. “Wherever” was this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the largest annual gathering of conservative activists, lobbyists and elected officials in all the land. CPAC is a who’s-who of conservative luminaries. GOP presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are all there. So are also-rans like Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain.

But roaming the reactionary ranks are some far less savory characters.

One particularly troubling CPAC panel was hosted by ProEnglish, a group trying to establish English, technically as foreign a tongue as Spanish or Swahili, as the official national language. That’s not the problem. What is the problem is that ProEnglish’s panel, titled “The Failure of Multiculturalism: How the pursuit of diversity is weakening the American Identity,” featured participants who can be described as nothing less than white Christian nationalists and even racists.

According to The Nation, panelists included Serge Trifkovic, Robert Vandervoort and Peter Brimelow.

Trifkovic is from Chronicles, a far-right magazine that claims it “defended Western Christian civilization” by “confronting Islam” and opposing immigration.

Vandervoort, who the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights says “was at the center of white nationalist activity” while  serving as organizer of the white nationalist group Chicagoland Friends of American Renaissance railed against “obsessive favoritism of allegedly disadvantaged groups hostile to European-descended societies…internalized by the political, academic and media elite…. They insist that countries do not belong to people who have inhabited them for generations but to whoever happens to be in their boundaries at any given time.”

He seems to be forgetting about a certain people who called the North American continent home for thousands of years before the first white European settlers brought disease, genocide and “civilization” to the “New World.”

Incredibly, Vandervoort added:

“It is deemed racist to mention that Europeans and their transatlantic cousins are an endangered species.”

Really? Ask a Native American if you can find one, and they’ll show you what a real endangered species looks like.

Believe it or not, Vandervoort wasn’t the most rabid racist on that panel. That dubious distinction goes to Peter Brimelow, author of numerous books, including Alien Nation: Common Sense About America’s Immigration Disaster in which he excoriates non-white immigrants. Brimelow compares the waiting room of an Immigration and Naturalization Service office with a New York City subway car: each is “an underworld that is not just teeming but also is almost entirely colored.”

Brimelow is also the founder of VDARE, which the Southern Poverty Law Center calls “a white nationalist hate website.” Marcus Epstein, who writes for VDARE, is a violent racist: in 2007, he pleaded guilty to randomly attacking a black woman and calling her a “nigger” on a Washington, D.C. street.

The panel’s discussion itself was an unremarkable series of screeds against multiculturalism, foreign languages, President Obama, immigration  and the left. Apparently, if you can’t read English, you can’t be well-informed about politics. And did you know that bilingualism is a form of treason?

When asked by The Nation’s Ben Adler to comment on criticism of the CPAC racists, Rep. Steve King (R-Ia.), one of the most conservative members of Congress, fumed: “The left is deliberately trying to undermine America. I’d be for open borders if every time an immigrant came in we deported a liberal.”
