NEA Rejects ‘Read Across America’ Donation from Former Porn Star Sasha Grey’s Filmmaker

Last November, recently retired adult film star Sasha Grey grabbed headlines after she appeared as a celebrity guest reader at a Southern California elementary school. Now Grey is back in the news again, and once again it’s over childhood education.

The Huffington Post reports that although Grey retired from the porn biz last year, one of her scenes appears in an X-rated film called Anal Artists. The film, which will debut this week, was produced by Assence Films. That company, citing Grey’s “recent efforts to expose children to the world of literature,” announced it would donate a portion of the proceeds from Anal Artists to the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” program.

The NEA has declined Assence’s offer.

“Sasha Grey is not affiliated with the National Education Association’s Read Across America program nor has she been invited or endorsed by NEA to read at any of the association’s Read Across America Day events, and NEA will not accept any proceeds from her latest, or any of her films,” a statement from the group, which is the nation’s largest teachers’ union, read.

Howard Levine of Exile Distribution, the company that will release Anal Artists, is calling the NEA’s rejection of Assence’s donation discriminatory.

“Anyone that’s supporting reading and helping kids and donating money to their cause should be accepted. I don’t understand why they would not accept that — only the fact she was in adult films,” Levine told the Huffington Post. “I understand their position — they don’t want to be associated with any adult film stars. I think that everybody has a slanted opinion on what the adult film community is so I know that they’re trying to be politically correct.”

Grey’s November participation in Emerson Elementary School’s Guest Reading Program raised eyebrows and ire due to her X-rated past. Grey read to first- and third-grade students at the Compton, California school, but her appearance was not connected with “Read Across America” in any way. Her appearance predictably outraged many parents, but according to the Huffington Post, school officials were unaware that she was once an adult film star. She was billed as an actress who appeared in HBO’s popular show “Entourage.”
